Abstract

Under conditions of air pollution in fresh blueberry spruce forests, we detected increased content of photosynthetic pigments, especially chlorophyll, in annual needles of spruce undergrowth and trees. Further, we observed an inverse relationship between the pigment content in annual spruce needles and the distance from the emission source in blueberry stands. The rate of photosynthesis as well as chlorophyll and carotenoid content in annual pine needles in fresh blueberry forests, especially the sphagnous ones, were significantly reduced the closer they were to the source of emissions (Arkhangelsk Heat Station, Arkhangelsk Pulp and Paper Mill).
